Learn Your AI ABCs ….. AI Chip and Server Benchmarks …. Mark Stansberry …. The StatisticsMatrix
For the most part Nvidia looks like it could have the AI chip benchmark crown this year as suggested in a 2023 HPCWire article and, to some extent in a 2022 Forbes article. Reading these two articles, it soon becomes apparent that there is little more to it than a crown There are so many AI chip and server companies in the AI market, one comes to realize that NVidia might not be the one-size-fits-all forever solution.
Important benchmarks of cost and power consumption also need to be considered in the context of one’s application. Design architecture, that is the chip selected, the system architecture and the AI software running on it also has a lot to do with the final performance results of an AI cloud-based or an AI edge based server. As a case in point, most of the literature suggests that NVidia’s impressive performance on the most common benchmarks is not a result of its chip architecture but Nvidia’s improvements in its AI optimization software that runs on it. All of which means, NVidia’s AI platform crown is not guaranteed as an AI chip or AI server forever crown, nor the best solution for your specific application.
