Oracle will spend billions on Nvidia’s GPUs for AI server applications but 3 times as much on Ampere Computing and Advanced Micro Devices CPUs for its database server applications. The move is expected to significantly reduce Oracle’s cloud costs but significantly improve cloud instance performance. Recalling an article sometime ago about Ampere, my thought was another server chip startup doomed to failure, like so many before. But apparently, Ampere has not only won the support of Oracle, one of its investors, but other big cloud players, like Microsoft, Amazon and numerous others. The main reason appears to be cost and performance. And part of that cost may well be lower data center energy bills. Apparently, Intel has not been invited to the party even though it has plenty of advanced server chips and AI server chips, all of which might make one wonder just how power efficient their solutions are. But let’s get back to the AI point. Relational databases may very well be or became a major part of the AI solution, more so for natural language processing applications like ChatGPT and Bard. The database can act as a temporary storage place for searches that AIbots do in the background. Search results stored and classified in the database, such as a subject matter expert database, need to be sorted at the inter-record and intra-record record level and then placed into coherent well-structured reports. So, does that mean Ampere’s chips may be an integral part of the low cost, low power AI solution, even though they are not GPUs but CPUs?
